Description
VERA KOCHUBEY is a contemporary artist based in Berlin with a degree in Psychology and Psychoanalysis. Her artworks are metaphysical, psychological and nihilistic; often dramatic visions and statements from a subconscious exploration of “the depth of things”.
Being an artist and queer personality in Moscow seemed impossible so she moved to Berlin in 2011 to establish her artistic career and lives her life as a free spirit. Living in Berlin and experiencing the gay and techno scene stripped her art of everything but brutal lines and punk brushstrokes. The neo-tribal look and feel of the masks and totems she creates combine a passion for classical portraiture and the need to play and experiment with the genre.
The artwork ‘Genius’ makes references to the life work of Andy Warhol & Basquiat, who she sees as role models. The phrase, “Everybody's a genius, everybody's a star!” seems like an extension on the philosophy of Warhol, that everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.
