RON MILLER's ‘Kimono Geisha’ presents the iconic figure in a colorblocked and folded Kimono, wearing a shimada-style wig, red lips, and the iconic black bar to cover her identity.
Geisha are Japanese women who entertain through performing the ancient traditions of art, dance, and singing, and are distinctively characterized by their wearing of kimono and oshiroi makeup. The color, pattern, and style of kimono is dependent on the season and the event the geisha is attending. A traditional kimono can take from two to three years to complete, due to the elaborate painting and embroidering. A romantic symbol of classical Japan, Geisha are traditionally shown as enigmatic, elegant, sexual, and ocassionally lonely figures who have become a shadow of their former selves within modern society.
RON MILLER’s Geisha plays a major role in many of their works, representing this post-modern, cosmopolitan and urban figure with various identities. The concept of the Geisha evolved from her being limited, even prohibited to self-express her uniqueness and individuality, in contrast to an obsession with self-expression and individuality in the West. The Geisha character is something of a trademark, a feature used to build a recognition of their work.
The motto ‘FUCK FAME’ is used with an irony and provocation, highlighting the paradoxical nature of fame, popularity, and influence in the era of commodification and digitising of art and culture, and the never-ending trend-setting streams on social media.
